I Will Worship - Devotional

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

-Psalm 19:1

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that a little time in the mountains is always good for my soul. I LOVE the mountains. I’m a Texan through and through, but I make it a goal of getting on a snowboard at least a couple times a year if at all possible. Because I need it.

But here’s what I’ve come to realize in the last few years — though I like cruising down the mountain for hours on end (trying my best not to break a limb), I don’t really need it. What I actually love and genuinely need is to be in God’s creation.

I need to breathe the fresh mountain air in my lungs. I need to hear the silence that inevitably accompanies a snowfall, forcing my anxious mind to finally stop and be still for but a moment — something that rarely happens these days. I need to gaze into the heavens and be reminded how small I really am. And most of all, I need to be reminded how big my God is.

That’s why I LOVE the mountains.

And for the past decade or so, every time I’ve been fortunate enough to venture up to God’s Country, I’ve opened up my Bible to Psalm 19. I’ve sat on the side of the mountain and meditated on its truth — “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge” (Psalm 19:1-2). And as I fixate my eyes upon the indelible grandeur and beauty all around me, what am I left to do? — Worship. I can’t help but join in with all creation and worship.

I honestly think some of my favorite, most worshipful moments have actually been these quiet ones in the mountains. Just sitting alone with the Father, full of awe, wonder, and thankfulness.

And out of one of these moments came the lyrics to I Will Worship —

“The heavens tell the story / The skies above proclaim

The earth the declares the glory / The Name above all Names

You are Holy / All creation sings You’re worthy

Of the highest praise / With all my heart

I will worship You always”

Psalm 19 goes on to say that “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous… in keeping them there is great reward (Verse 7-9, 11b).

He alone is the source of perfection, joy, refreshment, wisdom, purity, and righteousness. And verses 12 and 13 go on to remind us that He, and He alone, is the One who forgives our hidden faults. The God who formed the heavens and the earth, and all of creation, did not make those mountains in His image. No — He made you and me in His image, and thanks to finished work of the Cross, He calls us blameless.

“Your ways alone are perfect / Your Word alone is pure

And still you call me blameless / Because forever I am Yours”

So what are we left to do? — Worship. We can’t help but join in with all of creation and worship.
